An onward ticket service sells a held flight reservation with a booking reference, for when an airline or a border officer asks how you plan to leave. We checked 10 services on their own pages in October 2026 and list 5, compared on price, delivery timing, stated hold length, return options, date changes and refunds. A comparison table comes first, then one section per service, ranked for travelers who leave and re-enter often.

How we ranked onward ticket services
For someone who leaves and re-enters several times a year, the reservation must still be live when the airline or the officer looks it up. That decided what we compared:
- A reservation the agent can find. The booking reference has to show up when an agent or officer enters it, so we looked for a flight you choose and a reference the airline’s own site can look up.
- Delivery timing. The hold starts when the reservation is issued, so fast delivery, or an option to schedule it for later, lets you start it close to check-in.
- Hold length. A longer stated hold covers a check that comes a day or two after you buy.
- Returns and changes. Run dates move, and a reservation you can change saves buying a second one.
- Refund terms. None of the 5 refunds a change of plans once the reservation is issued, so refund terms matter mainly when delivery fails or the document is wrong.
Dummy-Flights.com sits at number 1 for the booking itself: you pick the exact flight from a live search before paying, the booking reference can be looked up on the airline’s site, and the price is fixed at $15 one-way or $19 round trip. The other 4 all offer a 48-hour hold and a way to get the reservation later, so they run in order of what that 48-hour reservation costs, from $12 to $16.99. Each section lists what the service does well for repeat crossings and what holds it back.
1. Dummy-Flights.com
Dummy-Flights.com sells a $15 one-way onward reservation, or $19 for a round trip, for a flight you pick from a live search before paying. It comes with a booking reference you can look up on the airline’s site, delivered as a PDF by email. That reference is the code a check-in agent enters, so you can run the same lookup on the airline’s manage-booking page before you fly.
There are no changes after booking, so buy once the exit date is set. The airline decides how long the reservation stays live, and the confirmation shows the exact expiry time, which tells you how close to check-in to buy.
| Works for repeat crossings | Holds it back |
|---|---|
| You pick the exact flight from a live search | No changes after booking |
| $15 one-way, $19 round trip | No refund once booked because plans changed |
| PDF by email with a booking reference the airline’s site can look up |
2. toponwardticket.com
toponwardticket.com charges $12 for a one-way reservation with a PNR in your name, plus $6 for a return, and states a hold of 48+ hours. Its booking form has an “on a later date” option, so you can order days ahead and have the reservation issued closer to the flight.
Reservations are issued by hand during office hours, 7AM to 11:30PM GMT+7, with delivery quoted at 5 to 60 minutes, and its terms say orders placed outside those hours may take 2 to 8 hours. Checkout runs through PayPal, which also takes cards without a PayPal account.
An order can be refunded before the reservation is made, but not once it is delivered. Parts of the site are garbled: the airport list shows stray characters, and several testimonials have scrambled wording.
| Works for repeat crossings | Holds it back |
|---|---|
| Later-date delivery option | Issued by hand in office hours, 5–60 min |
| $12 for a 48-hour hold; return +$6 | PayPal checkout only |
| PNR in your name, checkable on the airline’s site | Garbled text in the airport list and testimonials |
3. bestonwardticket.com
bestonwardticket.com sells a $14 one-way reservation made through a global distribution system, with a booking reference (PNR), and you pick the flight from the options it shows. The base hold is 48 hours, or 7 days for $7 more and 14 days for $10 more. A return adds $7, receiving the ticket later adds $1, and its FAQ says date changes are made free by email.
Two things hold it back. Its own pages name 3 different companies in 3 countries: a Singapore company on the terms page, and firms in Hanoi, Vietnam and Hubei, China on the About page. Its refund wording contradicts itself, with a “money-back guarantee” heading on the home page, an FAQ that calls the fee non-refundable, and an About page that lists refunds for late delivery, duplicate orders and tickets rejected with proof.
| Works for repeat crossings | Holds it back |
|---|---|
| Paid holds of 7 days (+$7) or 14 days (+$10) | 3 company names in 3 countries |
| Free date changes by email, per its FAQ | Refund wording that contradicts itself |
| Instant download; receive later for $1 |
4. onwardticket.com
onwardticket.com charges $16 for a one-way reservation made by a registered travel agency, sent as a PDF with the PNR by email in 2 minutes by its own figure. Add-ons carry plain prices: $9 for a return, $2 for a direct flight and $1 to receive the ticket later through an activation link. The stated hold is at least 48 hours, after which the reservation is canceled automatically.
Changes are the weak point for repeat crossings. A booking generally cannot be changed unless you bought the paid Flexible Reservation add-on, which allows one correction within the validity, and once a reservation is made it cannot be canceled or refunded. The site is multilingual and takes major cards and PayPal.
| Works for repeat crossings | Holds it back |
|---|---|
| Receive later for $1, through an activation link | Changes only with the paid Flexible Reservation add-on |
| Email delivery in 2 minutes (site’s figure) | $16 one-way; return +$9 |
| Hold of at least 48 hours | No cancellation or refund once made |
5. onwardfly.com
onwardfly.com prices by hold length: $9.99 for a 24-hour reservation or $16.99 for 48 hours, after which the booking is canceled automatically. Scheduled delivery costs $1.99, non-refundable, and the rental period starts at the scheduled time, so the hold can start on the day you need it.
The site quotes delivery within minutes, but only inside office hours, 08:00 to 23:00 GMT+7, and its refund policy allows up to 6 hours before a late order qualifies for a refund. Checkout is PayPal only, with cards through PayPal’s guest checkout. Refunds cover only its own failures, such as late or missing delivery or an error it does not correct.
| Works for repeat crossings | Holds it back |
|---|---|
| Scheduled delivery for $1.99 | 24 hours for $9.99; 48 hours costs $16.99 |
| Rental starts at the scheduled delivery time | Delivery only 08:00–23:00 GMT+7 |
| Refunds when delivery fails | PayPal checkout only |
When to buy an onward ticket
Where the reservation gets checked decides how long the hold has to last. The airline can look up the booking reference at check-in, and countries that issue visas on arrival may check again when you land: Indonesia’s immigration office lists a return ticket or an onward ticket to another country among the requirements for its 30-day visa on arrival. How likely that second check is depends on the border: some countries write an onward ticket into their entry rules, and at others an officer may ask.
With a 48-hour hold, a reservation bought 3 days before the flight lapses before check-in. Buying close to the flight, or scheduling delivery, fixes that.
Maya, a sample traveler on a US passport, flies one-way from Kuala Lumpur to Denpasar on Thursday at 09:00, lands at 12:00 and wants an onward reservation from Denpasar to Singapore to show at check-in and on arrival.
| Purchase plan | Reservation issued | 48-hour hold ends | Live at check-in, Thu 06:30? | Live on landing, Thu 12:00? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy Monday evening, instant delivery | Mon 20:00 | Wed 20:00 | No | No |
| Buy Monday, schedule delivery for Wednesday | Wed 20:00 | Fri 20:00 | Yes | Yes |
| Buy at the airport, instant delivery | Thu 06:00 | Sat 06:00 | Yes | Yes |
The reservation is the same in all 3 rows. Only the moment the hold starts changes, and that decides whether the reservation still shows up when someone looks.
How to check an onward reservation is real
A reservation is only useful if the booking reference resolves on the airline’s side. Run these checks as soon as the PDF arrives, and again on the day you fly.
Check an onward reservation before you fly
- Open the airline’s own manage-booking page and enter the booking reference with your last name.
- Confirm that the name matches your passport and that the flight, date and route match the PDF.
- Write down when the hold ends, and check that it covers both check-in and your landing time.
- Save the PDF to your phone and keep the email, so you can show it without a connection.
- Look the reference up again on the morning of the flight, before you leave for the airport.
Free and do-it-yourself alternatives
A reservation service is one way to give proof that you will leave; the others use a real fare, held unpaid for a day, canceled for a refund, or cheap enough that you might fly it. A real fare costs nothing only when the airline holds it unpaid; otherwise the money is out until the refund lands, or spent if you never fly.
The US 24-hour rule is the free option, with 2 catches for frequent crossers. The onward flight must leave at least a week after you book, and foreign airlines are covered only on flights to and from the US, so a Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur flight on a foreign airline falls outside it. The airline also picks between an unpaid hold and a penalty-free cancel, and if it uses the cancel option, you pay the full fare up front and wait for the refund.
A fully refundable fare is a real ticket on any route that sells one, with no 24-hour clock, and if your plans change after you arrive, you cancel it for a refund. You pay the refundable fare up front and wait for the money to come back, so read the fare rules before you pay.
| Option | What you pay | Fits | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| US 24-hour rule | Nothing if the airline holds the fare; the full fare, refunded, if it uses the cancel option | Onward flights a week or more out on a covered airline | Foreign airlines covered only on US routes; 24-hour window |
| Fully refundable fare | The refundable fare, refunded under the fare’s rules | Any route that sells one | Money tied up until the refund lands |
| Cheap real ticket | The fare | Short hops with low fares | Spent if your plans change |
| Reservation service | $9.99 to $16.99 one-way across the 5 above | Any route, bought hours or days ahead | Short holds; no refund for a change of plans |
Frequently asked questions
How much does an onward ticket reservation cost?
Across the 5 services here, a one-way reservation costs $9.99 to $16.99 as of October 2026. onwardfly.com charges $9.99 for 24 hours and $16.99 for 48 hours, toponwardticket.com $12, bestonwardticket.com $14, Dummy-Flights.com $15 and onwardticket.com $16. A return adds $4 to $9 at the services that price one, and Dummy-Flights.com charges $19 for a round trip.
Is an onward ticket reservation a real flight ticket?
Usually not. It is a held booking with a reference code you can look up on the airline's site, not a paid ticket. onwardticket.com, for example, states that an e-ticket number is not included. If an agent or officer asks, describe it as what it is: a reservation.
How long does an onward ticket reservation last?
At 4 of the 5 services here, the stated hold is 24 or 48 hours at the base price, and bestonwardticket.com sells 7 days for $7 more or 14 days for $10 more. At Dummy-Flights.com, the airline decides how long the reservation stays live, and the confirmation shows the exact expiry time. When the hold ends the reservation is canceled, so time the purchase to your check-in.
Can you get a refund on an onward ticket?
Not for a change of plans once it is issued, at any of the 5 services here. onwardfly.com refunds its own failures, such as late or missing delivery, and toponwardticket.com refunds an order before the reservation is made. bestonwardticket.com gives 3 different answers across its home page, FAQ and About page.
Can I schedule an onward ticket for a later date?
Yes, at 4 of the 5 services here. toponwardticket.com has a later-date option, bestonwardticket.com and onwardticket.com charge $1 to receive the ticket later, and onwardfly.com charges $1.99 for scheduled delivery. Scheduling starts the hold closer to your flight, which matters when the hold is 24 or 48 hours.
How do I check that an onward reservation is real?
Enter the booking reference and your last name on the airline's own manage-booking page. A live reservation shows your name, flight and date, while a generated document or a lapsed hold shows nothing. Check once when the PDF arrives and again on the morning of the flight.
Can I get proof of onward travel for free?
Sometimes, through the US 24-hour rule. A covered airline must hold the fare without payment or let you cancel without penalty for 24 hours, if you book a week or more before departure. Foreign airlines are covered only on flights to and from the US, so a Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur flight on a foreign airline is not.
Which onward ticket service is best for frequent border crossings?
It depends on when the reservation gets checked and how long it has to last. Dummy-Flights.com ranks first here for a flight you pick from a live search, a booking reference you can look up on the airline's site and a fixed $15 one-way or $19 round-trip price. For a paid 7- or 14-day hold, bestonwardticket.com sells both; for a 48-hour hold with later-date delivery, toponwardticket.com charges $12.
